Why should I have an independent midwife?

You choose your midwife, it is as simple as that. The choice is yours.

Independent midwives offer what the health service should offer you but can't because of time and money constraints.

We offer continuity of carer throughout your pregnancy, labour and birth and the following month. We have time to sit and talk and listen to your questions, fears and anxieties. It gives us time to develop a mutually trusting relationship
The evidence indicates that where you have a female companion that you know and trust, with you throughout your labour and birth, things are more likely to go normally and naturally. Also there is more chance of successful breast-feeding, and less chance of postnatal depression.

If you choose to have your baby in hospital or if it become necessary to transfer in then your will have an informed advocate to ensure that your wishes are met and that you are not forced down any path you do not wish to go down.

After the birth of your baby we will have more time together during our postnatal visits to continue to assist with breast-feeding, time to discuss the momentous events that have occurred, as well as ensuring all remains well with you and your baby.

Is home birth safe for my baby and me?

If you are fit and healthy and your baby is fit and healthy and remain so throughout your pregnancy, then the evidence indicates that not only is it safe, it may even be better for you and your baby.

Is waterbirth safe, and can I have a waterbirth at home?

Waterbirth is a safe option and one that promotes natural pain relief, after all the baby live at present in water, and simply goes from one lot of water to another. As long as certain things are in place: i.e. your baby is well throughout labour and the water is kept at the correct temperature it is a safe option for you.

As for water birth at home, it takes a little organisation, but it is very possible, and in fact is very popular with mums wanting homebirth.

What options are there open to me for pain relief if I choose a home birth?

• Hydrotherapy
• Massage and relaxation
• TENS
• Homeopathy and other alternative medicines
• Entenox - "Gas and Air"
• Pethidine (although usually not advised)
